Lymphedema therapy

Lymphedema therapy

  • reduces swelling
  • relieves pain
  • promotes relaxation

Lymphedema therapy activates the lymphatic system and is used to treat swelling and pain caused by various conditions. Lymph, or lymphatic fluid, is a protein-rich tissue fluid that filters from capillaries into the tissues. One of the main functions of the lymphatic system is to regulate tissue fluid pressure by returning lymphatic fluid back into the bloodstream. The lymphatic system can therefore be described as the body’s drainage network. When lymphatic circulation is disrupted, lymphedema (lymphatic swelling) may occur.

Lymphedema therapy includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging and compression garments (such as stockings and sleeves), therapeutic exercises, and guidance for self-care. The duration and frequency of treatment depend on factors such as the extent of the treated area, the client’s age, and general health. A more detailed treatment plan is created together with the client during the first appointment. Lymphedema therapy may sometimes require relatively long treatment sessions and treatment periods.

Who is lymphedema therapy suitable for?

The most common indications for lymphedema therapy include:

  • swelling following cancer surgery or radiation therapy
  • swelling caused by congenital lymphatic system disorders
  • post-operative swelling
  • swelling after injury or trauma
  • advanced venous insufficiency
  • conditions caused by recurrent infections (most commonly erysipelas)

Manual lymphatic drainage can also be used as a treatment method for conditions such as rheumatic diseases, fibromyalgia, nerve irritation, overuse injuries, and stress. The manual techniques used are light, rhythmic, and pumping in nature. The treatment is painless and relaxing. The rhythmic movements activate the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing the body to relax. Lymphedema therapy is also a form of preventive healthcare and can be accessed without a physician’s referral.

When is lymphedema therapy not recommended?

Lymphedema therapy is not suitable for everyone. The cause of swelling must always be clarified. In addition to lymphatic circulation disorders, swelling may be caused by certain medical conditions that may contraindicate treatment. In unclear situations, consultation with a physician is always recommended.

Common contraindications include:

  • malignant tumors with ongoing treatment
  • acute infections (viral, bacterial, or fungal)
  • deep vein thrombosis
  • untreated heart failure
