Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be provided as a standalone treatment, but most often our OMT physiotherapists use acupuncture in combination with other therapies.
Acupuncture activates the body’s natural healing processes, with the goal of returning to a pain-free and relaxed state. Its effect is based on stimulating acupuncture points, which are located along so-called meridians—pathways formed by nerve endings. Needling can also target trigger points, i.e., painful spots in the affected area. The effect of traditional acupuncture needles can be enhanced by applying a small electrical current.
Acupuncture is especially effective for musculoskeletal pain and tension that is not relieved by medication. Medical studies have shown that acupuncture can reduce pain through neurohormonal responses and the body’s own reflex mechanisms. The use of acupuncture in physiotherapy has become increasingly common.
