Lower limb assessment and custom orthotics

Pain in the foot or lower limb is often caused by functional dysfunction or uneven loading. Through a thorough assessment, we identify the underlying causes of pain and symptoms. A lower limb assessment examines the structure and function of the foot, lower limb, and the body as a whole. We assess movement both without load, in standing position, and by observing dynamic movement such as walking and running technique. Video analysis is used when needed. The aim of the assessment is to determine the cause of pain and identify the most effective treatment approach, such as targeted exercises or custom orthotics.

Custom Orthotics

We use AskelAid orthotics, developed by the physiotherapists at Askelklinikka based on over 20 years of experience. These orthotics are designed to activate and support the foot. Each orthotic is made in two parts: the top layer is heated and individually molded to the patient’s foot, and then attached to a wedge base that is shaped and adjusted to correct alignment issues. This manufacturing method ensures a precise and comfortable fit. The orthotics can also be modified later if needed, to adapt to changes in the patient’s condition.

When providing orthotics, we schedule a physiotherapy or OMT physiotherapy appointment. During this session, we perform a lower limb assessment, take measurements for support, and create molds of the patient’s feet. Based on this, fully custom orthotics are produced and fitted. The patient then receives the orthotics for use. Usage should begin gradually, following the guidance of our physiotherapists. Adjustments can be made if additional support is needed or if the condition improves and less support is required. For best results, orthotics should be combined with physiotherapy, where we guide proper loading of the lower limb, provide tailored exercises, and use manual therapy techniques when necessary to optimize function.
